I was working as an aid in a Kindergarten class and went through almost an entire school year of a child working me over. As much as I thought I was winning against his defiant character, deep down, he had me. It wasn’t until another teacher said “Daina, when he gets angry tell him he has a choice.” For him the choice was to do as was expected or to have a time out. I tried it and in a matter of a few battles behaviors were changing. Not just his behavior but my own. This small child was being taught that he had control over his own choices and when making the correct one he was much happier. I learned at 37 years old that we are in control of our own choices.

Little does that teacher know how much I learned in Kindergarten that year. I find myself often in a mood or state of mind where I know my thoughts are not for the good. It isn’t always easy for me to get out of that frame of mind. Even when I hear these wonderful words in Philippians it isn’t so easy for me to put them into practice. I’m uncertain why… I at times feel like something has a hold of my mind and won’t let go. I do know that if I concentrate hard enough that I can break it.

What I find that works for me is time alone. I need time for me. That may sound selfish but if we don’t take care of us then we are no good to others. My advice to you if you have the battles of your mind that I tend to, is to walk away from your thoughts. Go buy yourself a cup of coffee and take a drive. Stay up late at night by yourself and fall asleep on the couch after eating a bowl of ice cream. Go to the mall and buy yourself a new candle. Simple things regenerate the mind and allow us to refresh our thoughts so that we may see all that we are truly blessed with.

What I know is that I have many years of life ahead of me and I want my future to be brighter then the day behind me. I want to give joy to others and I feel as though I’ve lived a long life already without passing much joy on. My goal for this new year is to make the choice to be a better person. I’m going to write this so that I will be accountable. I want to take the time to give. I want to take the time to love. I want to take the time to listen. I want to take the time to be the wife, mother, friend, and person that God intended me to be. I want to touch the lives of others that I will never know or meet. Image doing something for someone that gives them a moment of joy. That makes me smile. That makes God smile.
